Translucent candy subsurface scattering development · Storybook environment lighting · Internal glow and jewel-like material quality
Intent
This was a storybook world — literally Wizard of Oz inspired — so the lighting needed that fairytale quality where everything glows from within. Not realistic at all, but emotionally true. The Twizzlers themselves needed to look delicious while also feeling like characters in this magical narrative.
Challenge
Translucent candy is a nightmare to light convincingly. Light passes through it, scatters inside, exits at unexpected angles. Getting that gummy, jewel-like quality without making it look like plastic or glass required a lot of subsurface scattering work and careful attention to how the light sources interacted with the candy geometry.
Approach
I built the look around internal glow — the idea that the candy itself was a light source. Large, soft key lights established the storybook atmosphere, but the hero lighting on the Twizzlers came from carefully art-directed subsurface effects. Lots of color in the fill lights to keep things playful.
Reference
Classic Disney animation backgrounds — that painted quality where the light feels like it's part of the world rather than illuminating it. Also the work of children's book illustrators who create these impossibly lush, glowing environments.
